It kind of depends. Is the hip hop more on the rap side, or is it more towards the actual song side?

Rap, doesn't do much. It is more talking really fast than anything. But hip hop or more songlike things where they actually sing, is definitely music.

If you really want to define music, think of the music house.

Pretend I draw a picture of a house here.

Roof-Harmony
2nd Story-Melody
1st Story-Rhythm
Basement-Beat

Rap only has beat, and rhythm. But usually, real songs have all of these.

But if you like Hip-Hop, don't stop listening to it!

Hip Hop is music, and really bad music at that. I'm not much into that, but old school Rap is still the king. Today's Hip Hop "artists" are put together by a "producer" just like Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Back Street Boys and all those teenies in the Disney machine. They have NO real talent to bring, but had to be taught how to do everything. Try listening to a Hip Hopper live and you will see through the charade.

Hip Hop is not music because everything is done in the studio. Most artists today do not even write their own lyrics, beats, etc. There's a reason why not a lot of Hip Hop performers tour. No one is in it for the LOVE of music, they're in it for the money. Besides, there's no depth or feeling to it. You can only sample *cough* RIP OFF *cough* other peoples' music for so long.

I'm just gonna quote Elvis Costello and end this here "Talking about music is just as relevant as dancing about architecture"

The people who say that have no concept of what hiphop OR music really is then. If it isnt music then what is? Tapping your fingers on a table could be considered rythym or music.

To the moron above who said rapping takes no skill you have obviously never listened to hiphop. It is NOT about attitude, that is just the way your ignorant racist mind thinks. Lyricists such as Nas come up with better lyrics then you will find in 99% of rock music. Would you also say it takes no skill to create and recite poetry?

for me, evry sound that got its pattern and can make song, is music.
so, for me, hiphop is music.
some say that hiphop is not music, because they can not find the pattern,i mean, they can not accept it as a sound that has a harmonic pattern. or maybe because they dont know the definition of music ?????

Hiphop is not music because it requires no skill. It is more just a statement of a person's ATTITUDE.

It is just someone standing there telling you about their attitude, which is not particularly interesting by the way.

Hip hop is good music, gangsta rap has ruined it for everybody.
Good hip hop is still out and about you just have to look for it.
If you don't like the genre, just don't listen to it why slag it off.
Its human nature not to like the same music as we are so
diverse,I don't like country music, doesn't make it bad music
just means its not to my taste.
