A really excellent book with some brilliant essays in is this one:

Shelley M. Frankenstein: complete, authoritative text with biographical and historical contexts, critical history, and essays from five contemporary critical perspectives edited by Johanna M. Smith (London, Macmillan, 1992)

It's the original text plus critical essays about it, covers a wide range of critical theories and very well written.

Hope this helps :-)

Literary criticism can be quite hard to find without proper access to university libraries. That said, you will find some criticism at a standard library; and, one of the best sources of contemporary criticism in my opinion, pick up the Norton edition of the book. I don't have the Norton of Frankenstein (and I'm now wondering why not), but Norton always includes a good variety of criticism along with the work.

Mary Shelley's life is great. She ran around with the bad boys of the time--and don't forget to check out her parents too, both influential writers in their own right--especially her mother, who wrote the original book on feminism.

A nice, succinct bio, including the origins of Frankenstein at Villa Diodati and her dreams: http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/mshelley.htm

And the IPL site for it, undoubtedly the best online source for criticism: http://www.ipl.org.ar/cgi-bin/ref/litcrit/litcrit.out.pl?ti=fra-63

Some good general stuff from Stephen King on Shelley, her life events that may have impacted on the story and her monster and how it relates to other archetypes in his book 'Danse Macabre' link attached which gives some idea of his thoughts.

Use a search engine like Google and enter the words pertaining to the information you are looking for. If all the useless crap that the internet has to offer turns out to be to much to look for, then go to your public library and ask to see the encyclopedias in the reference section, the librarians should be happy to help.
There is also a section of the library devoted to lit. crit. and since Frankenstien is one of the most widely reprinted works of fiction ever, you should be able to find something.
