You will get lots of personal opinion for this question. If you are from the U.S, I'll say London (historic, lots of attractions, pretty on the right day) , Paris (elegant, arty, graceful, rude people), Berlin (an up-and-comer, uber-cool) , Krakow (relaxing, pretty, nice people, lots of attractions in and around) and St.Petersburg (I'm bias on this one because I live in Russia, but it's beautiful, great architecture, amazing people). It's impossible to choose just 5 places though.

If you go with the masses: Visit London, Paris, Berlin, Rome and Madrid - in this order. They are the most visited cities in whole europe. But it's not easy to answer if we don't know what you expect from your trip. Especially the four first cities are in a class of its own with attractions that no other city could offer (London as the only european city competing a little bit with new york in size and diversity, Paris as the beautiful city of love with it's great buildings of 18th and 19th century and the Louvre, Rome as the eternal city with buildings of the roman empire and Berlin as the modern but cheap city in which the world history of the 20th century took place). Instead of Madrid I would choose Barcelona as a vibrant city with one of the biggest old towns in the world and the only really big city with nice beaches.

But: What's with Lissabon, Vienna, Neaple, Dublin, Amsterdam, Prague, Krakow..... then?

it's difficult to name 5 cities.... i 'd go to rome and italy anyway, there are so many beautiful places in italy, that it's worth to stay there for a longer time. Also Amsterdam is very interesting, not only for the "coffeeshops".
