Silk melts, wool smoulders and cotton will burn

If your iron is too hot, the acrylic will burn and melt first, followed by cotton (a natural, light weight fiber), wool (animal hair) and silk (silk worm web) is last. They say to be really careful with silk, but I've found it to be quite durable. However, all cloth will burn at some point.

If you are concerned about ironing, put a cloth or towel over the item; then, continue to iron, making sure the iron is not on the highest setting. Sometimes misting the item first is good, but, I wouldn't recommend it for silk.
The other answers are very good and true. Never iron wool, simply lay flat to dry & preferably on a breathable surface tool.
