Hi everybody, I make delicious breakfast tacos, burritos and sandwiches. I live close behind the "motor mile" which is a long stretch of car dealerships. I'm sure all those employees would love to have lunch delivered conveniently if they can't break for lunch sometimes. I could sell to them homemade food at a good price but I have no idea what type of license I'd have to get and how much it would cost. I live in Texas. I don't plan on doing this on a grand scale, I just want to make a little extra money. Thanks for your help.

Wow, you sound like a very motivated and creative woman! I commend you. And your idea sounds like an excellent one.

I really don't know what the laws are in your state, but I wanted to suggest an idea that may help. Instead of *selling* them for an exact cost, you could "suggest" a donation. This way you are selling nothing and anything that anyone gives you is a GIFT. You could try this until you are able to find out the laws for your local area - and this would also help you to save up for your business license should you decide to make this something more than a part-time hobby. Not to mention, this will also give you a good idea of whether this is a business venture you would like to pursue BEFORE you spend the money on a business license.

Good luck!!! And again, let me say that I admire your spirit!

Selling Homemade Food

You need to have a food handlers license which can be obtained by calling your local health department and finding out when they offer the classes. Usually they are an 8 hour class with an exam afterwards....not very difficult but will have some information that really won't pertain to you, but pay attention. Also ask the person at the health department to send you the guidelines for food preparation within a home business...they should have something to help you get started.

Then you need to get a business license with your city or township and the possibly the state. They usually cost $200-$300 each. You need the license because you are creating a business by selling a product.

Good Luck

Not in the USA. You at least have to have the appropriate level of food handler's card from the department of agriculture, and all your employees have to have one.

You don't need a business license until you reach a certain level of activity that presumes you're running a business instead of just enjoying a lucrative hobby.

If anyone is injured due to the food you provide, you can be sued personally to provide repair for their suffering and any losses. Consider buying a million or more in coverage. Having a business license might help separate your personal assets - depending on how you set it up.
