I had to format the laptop and because I didn't have the original disk, I used a copy. I thought this would be ok as I had the product key. Is there a way of validating windows without bying a disk?

Get in contact with Microsoft and inquire about getting a replacement disc sent out to you or get in contact with the manufacture of your Laptop and see what they can do.

As long as you have the Original CD Key and are registered as the owner i can't see why they cannot send out one for me.

Id contact Microsoft first

If its a laptop get on the Manufactors website on another PC with internet access and enter your Serial# etc. You can also call them. They may send you a disk or you can download and burn it.
Forget contacting Microsoft, they sell in bulk to manufactures and the manufacture owns the rights to that software which they sell to you.
