Being a movie director is hard. It doesn't mean you can't do it. It just means that wanting to do it isn't enough.

Today, budding movie directors like yourself don't wait to be discovered and showered with tons of cash. They take matters into their own hands. They write and direct lots of short films. Some on 8mm, some on video, some on DV. They practice their craft. They work on other people's movies - most of the time for free - to network and see how other people solve problems on the set. They will work as grips, cinematographers... anything to get more experience.

If you're serious about being a director, look at Robert Rodriquez's life story, or M. Night Shyamalan's. Both were making short films with their friends and siblings long before they got a Hollywood contract. Both wrote their own screenplays. Both dreamed of being a movie director and would not take "no" for an answer.

The best way to convince your dad is to start small. Create some short films on a low budget. Great stories transcend poor production values. If you don't have a camera, see if you can borrow one. Find out about other people making films in your area. Most universities have a TV/Film or video departments. Ask them for more information.
Read books on the subject like "Rebel without a Crew".

But most importantly, start writing down your story ideas. If you want to be a movie director, it's probably because you have a lot of stories you want to tell. Write them down. Learn how to write a screenplay. This doesn't require any equipment or crew. Study good films and learn about plot points, character arcs and thematic devices. Movie directors like Coppola, Tarantino and Shane Black all were screenwriters before becoming directors.

At some point in everyone's lives, they dream of the impossible. What separates the dreamers from the achievers is a plan. If you want your father to be convinced you're serious, you should begin setting realistic goals for yourself. Maybe to make a short in a few months. Then make a better one in a year. Maybe to enter the film festivals...etc.

The most important question you have to ask yourself is why do you want to be a movie director? If it's all about the glamour and fame, then you're in it for the wrong reasons. If it's because you love to entertain or create memorable stories, then you're on to something.

David Fincher (Se7en, wrestle club, The Social community, Alien 3, Zodiac, the game) He began off making music video clips for artists which incorporates Madonna and Paula Abdul, and graduated to finish length function video clips. I income from the actual shown reality that he's not a gap director (i.e. M. evening Shyamalan has an same formulation everytime) Fincher has made the movie a gritty artwork of artwork everytime even as branching out into diverse genres. One one hand you've Se7en and the different, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He directed my well-liked action picture of all time, wrestle club, and did a large interest protecting tru to the e book. in reality, his ending became more effective perfect than the e book's ending, it truly is an anomaly! enable's no longer forget his gritty take on the perfect broking service, the girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I also love his use of Trent Reznor for the soundtracks to his video clips (Se7en, Social community, Dragon Tattoo) protecting the audio environment in his video clips edgy, akin to his video clips... akin to Fincher himself.

If it's something you really want to do you should go for it. Steven Spielberg has a new reality show coming out that is looking for filmmakers. If you have something you've made already you can send it in and maybe have a shot. The deadline is Febuary 16th and the winner recieves a million dollar movie deal!
