I can't decide if ought to give my boy suck a pacifier. he's only a month old. Sometimes, he starts to cry after less than 1hour after we breastfed him and will not sleep after feeding. He moves his mouth, seems looking for somethings to suck. Normally, fed babies can last 2-3hrs before next feeding. Worried that i might have over feed him cos, always offer him milk whenever he cries. Would a pacifier help him? Pls advice, cos read about disadvantages of using pacifiers.

Its a tough call....firstly, using a pacifier when hes one month old does not neccessarily mean he will want to take it to school with him 5 years from now. Breastfed babies CANNOT be over-fed. If he cries and you bring him to the breast, he will either suck because he was hungry or he will suck for only a few minutes because he needed some comfort. Breastfed babies do tend to be chubbier than bottle fed babies! This will peak at about 6 months and start to even out from there and by the time is he weaned he will be about the same as other babies....and by the time he is a toddler will probably be slimmer than many formula-fed babies...so if you are seeing him 'bulk up' soon, dont think that this is a problem! If you do decide to use a pacifier, use it judiciuosly. If he hasnt eaten in two hours....dont use the paci then, feed him instead...if he is the sort of baby who wants to suck on you all day long (and by this i mean like 60 - 90 minutes every feed) and you need some peace THAT would be the time to use the paci. After one month of breastfeeding, your baby should be OK to start a paci....provided he is gaining weight and all that good stuff...i dont think its always detrimental to a breastfed baby.

Throw away the pacifier. Babies are better-off without them. Breast feeding is the best thing you can do for you little one. I applaud you for doing the right thing by him. He may be still a little hungry after you have fed him. You can offer the breast again or try him with a little bottled formula, don't make it too strong or you'll end up with a fat baby who could have health problems later in life. I wouldn't take too much notice of the theory on how often you should breastfeed. Doctors are always making pronouncements and then later another doc. will say that that is not true, so go with your own gut feeling. Good luck to you and your baby.

you dont have to give a pacifier to a month old baby .. all you have to do is if hes crying after feeds just try to offer him the breast again to see whether he drinks milk. if he s still hungry he'll just suck and fill his stomach, or if hes not drinking, all hes askingyou for is your warmth, love and a little cuddle. just hold him in your hands then he might fall asleep.

my babys 10 months and he never used a pacifier or his thumb. all he wants is to have a little breast milk before he sleeps. im a stay at home mum so im there on demand...

Pacifiers are great aids if you have a baby who cries a lot. If your baby is one of those who keeps on crying after you have done everything to make him comfortable...then give him a pacifier. After-all; You have to get some sleep at night.

If he takes to it (some babies don't) make sure to start taking it away from him 3 to 4 months before his first birthday. Try not to give it during the day, and only give it at nights to get him off to sleep if he is extra fussing.

If he gets over a year old and he still wants it, start pretending that you can't find it. Put a really worried look on your face, and say..."Where is it? I can't find it" Start looking around for it to make him see that you really don't know where it is. Ask him to help you to look for it.

He will soon start to learn that if you can't find it...then he has to do without it. If he is still having problems sleeping at nights...and you are tired and exhausted...You can find it sometimes. Just pretend to look for it as usual and make sure that he hears you say "There it is!"
On the nights when you decide NOT to find it, he will soon start accepting the fact and go to sleep without it.

Hope this information helps...good luck.

You won't overfeed him, he'll quit eating when he's full. If you want to "stretch" the feedings out, try giving him a pacifier when he wakes and cries. It put my daughter back to sleep for a couple hours the first time I gave it to her(she was 3 weeks old) and at about 6 weeks she was sleeping 8 hours straight. Good luck!

you cant over feed a baby. They will let you know when theyhad enough by stopping or falling asleep. You doc should have told you this. I think it would be a bad idea for you to use a bink right now becasue I bet you would not feed him when he really needed food. Get him on the bottle, it sounds like hes not getting enough food. Breast fed babies eat every hour. I breast fed both my kids and they are both healthy sizes and not over weight

I have a 3yr old son and mama said that a pacifier could make my boy butttooth or beaver teeth. In other words after a period of time it messes with the development of his front grill.

Don't give him the pacifier. Probably just needs to be held and loved.

i agree and disagree with your previous answers. yeah, you feed a baby when they are hungry, doesnt matter how often. but for babies sucking is a self soothing method. my son is a thumb sucker so i never dealt with pacifers. but i think they could be helpful if they are used when needed. i have seen mothers stick a pacifer in a babies mouth who was perfectly content. that always kinda irked me. but again, babies suck to soothe. if you put him to your breast, hes gonna latch on whether he is hungry or not. took me a little while to figure it out myself, but eventually you will know when it is hunger and when it is not.
