yes they do, which is why it is just as important as it is with any other fish to have a filter and proper sized tank.

if you suspect your betta is not "pooping" you may want to consider adding peas to his diet. instead of betta food once every other week give him pea. get a frozen pea and soak it in hot ater for an hour. then remove the skin and take a small piece (small enough to fit into betta's mouth) and feed it to him. once he eats it give him another small piece. if you have a filter give him one or two small pieces then put the rest of the shelled pea in the tank, most bettas will nibble at it and have fun playing with it.

When you see goldfish with poop hanging off them they are very constipated from over feeding. Bettas anal pore is not in the same place, its up under the chin. You shouldn't really or if at all RARELY see a fish pooping. Also, the pieces should be small, so you shouldn't see build up on the bottom, unless you stir up the gravel.

a betta's tank must be cleaned just like any other fish you own and it is because of the mess in the bottom of the tank.you may not see it but they go just like any other animal, they can be kept in a small tank but if you really want your betta to be happy keep him in a bigger tank.betta's are a chinese fighting fish and actually thrive in sewers in some country's.i put a plastic ball in for mine and he gets to play and get his exercise about 1hr daily like that, and he looks at it by his tank when it is not in there.hope this helps

What goes in, must come out. If not, there's a problem. ;)
