Stephanie J. Block played Elphaba in the production workshops and on the national tour, and Idina Menzel originated on Broadway. Others who played the role were Julia Murney (current Broadway cast), Shoshana Bean, and Ana Gasteyer. There were a lot of others, what with standbys and understudies and replacements, but those are the ones I know off of the top of my head.

Idina Menzel originally played Elphaba in NYC but she left to play Maureen Johnson in the 2005 movie of Rent........I've heard she will be coming back to Wicked February 12th of this year

The leading lady until the 1st of Jan was indina Menzel replaced then by Kerry Ellis. Indina Menzel was the original Elphaba from the Broadway production and has now moved on to something new. She really is a fantastic leading lady

Idina Menzel originated the part. She was also Maureen in the original cast of "RENT." The second Elphaba, and understudy to Idina, was Shoshona Bean.
