Hi all, I went for a ultrasound scan a few days ago which is not routine for my pregnancy. I am 18 weeks and I went for the scan because its to train junior doctors how to do scans!
Anyway when i went baby looked fine but the sonographer in charge noticed a very low lying placenta? I dont know if its blocking my cervix but when she was doing the scan she could see my cervix so does that mean the cervix is not blocked?? I have been researching this low placenta thing and I suppose its only a real worry if its completing blocking the cervix. So if she could see the cervix on the scan is that good news??? Thanks all.

At this stage of your pregnancy I wouldn't worry too much. As your uterus expands and stretches upwards, your placenta may move out of the way of your cervix. I am sure you will be checked again later on in the pregnancy to make sure of the placentas position. A low lying placenta - or placenta previa - isn't as unusual as you think and the doctors of today are well prepared for a pregnancy and birth that has this condition. Just relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Good luck.

We experienced the same thing. You are still early enough in your pregnancy that the placenta has not yet had an opportunity to "move up". Give it some time and try not to worry about it. They will most likely give you another ultrasound around weeks 30-32 to check the location of the placenta at that time. We had our 2nd scan 2 weeks ago and the placenta had indeed moved to its proper position.
There is some good news! If offered in your area, weeks 30-32 are the time when they do the new high tech 4-D ultrasound scans! You can actually see a picture of your baby and what they are going to look like! Try to focus on that instead of worrying about the current location of the placenta!

I had a low lying placenta during my third pregnancy. It scared me at first, until I learned that it usually corrects itself before delivery. My doctor did 2 additional ultrasounds during my pregnancy just to make sure. I'm sure your doctor will monitor your condition as well. He should at least check to see if it has moved before delivery.

A low-lying placenta is not an uncommon finding on second trimester ultrasound scan. As many as 15% to 20% (one in five to six) of pregnancies have a low lying placenta. Fortunately, only 5% (one in 20) of these remain low lying at 32 weeks and only one third of those are low lying at term (37 weeks). After 28 weeks, a low lying placenta is known as placenta praevia.

The vast majority of pregnant women will have their placenta issues resolved by the time labour starts and will not have any problems.

In mid pregnancy it is of no concern. One in four have this. With the exception of 0.5% to 1% all cases become normal. Please go through the article on the following web page.
