I have a 2000 BMW Z3 and I need to go have it smog tested. I live in San Diego, CA (not sure what is required to pass in SD). The airbag light is on, do you think that will cause my car to not pass smog?

The Airbag light "on" means" that there is a problem with the air Bag. To pass the CA SMOG Test, your OBD-II car needs to have a diagnistic readout made by connecting a special cable to the 16 pin Diagnostic Connector under the dash. The CHECK ENGINE light must do 3 things: It must come "on" with the key "ON" and engine "OFF; The CHECK ENGINE light must go off within 4 seconds after the engine starts. The CHECK ENGINE light must stay off during the entire SMOG Check, or as long as the engine is running. A CHECK ENGINE light that never comes on, may need a new light bulb, but the car will fail the CA SMOG test, regardless.

I also have a z3, great car isn't it?

At any rate, your car has a computer... simply call around to a parts store and most will have a diagnotics device which will interface with your car and tell you exactly what error is causing your airbag light to come on. If it's not smog related (which, with BMW, who knows...) then it PROBABLY won't cause any issues with registration/smogging.

When you do the smog test, the will also plug into the computer on your car, because that can give them a lot of information about your car's emissions, though I'm not sure (in California) if they still have to run it through an actual emissions check as well.

If you will click on "cars & transportation" in the questions, at the top you will see "leaders". Click that, and you will see the top ten answers in this catagory. A guy called "dodge man" is in the top spot, and the guy in 10th place is a California Safety Inspector that does these tests. If you will click on his picture, it will bring up his profile. In his profile you will find a place to email him and/or IM him. He will be able to give you the answer you are looking for since this is what he does. I feel it is a gamble to guess at what to do, because once you get turned down, you will then be forced to make a repair before you can pass inspection.
Glad to help you, Good Luck!!!

Yes. Its the "CHECK ENGINE" light that you have to be worried about. You can even pass a safety inspection with a malfunctioning airbag.

Smog... isnt that when they measure the ammount of smog you car produces? You're thinking of inspection if you're worried about failing because of a light.

no, it will not affect it. airbags are not required to pass a safety and the light on shouldn't matter.
