Could you help me please?

I am writing a dissertation, the topic being whether art (be that painting, writing, photography etc) can be effective in helping the sufferer cope with the distressing symptoms of the illness, and bring (if only temporarily) a release and comfort to him/her. If YES, could you please explain why this is so. Thank you

Do a little research on Art Therapy. It is a common form of treatment for mental illness of all kinds. It operates on the premise that creating art provides a form of expression of emotions and feelings in both a direct and indirect manner. One advantage is that it does not rely on verbal skills or language. People who cannot express themselves in words may be able to express themselves artistically. It is most often an adjunct to other types of treatment. Art also provides a positive focus for an individual - it can be enjoyable and promote self esteem. Good luck.
