The mask is a block on the numbers 255 is a total block for the octet. 255.255.255.128 blocks all numbers but the last 128 of which you can not use 0 or 255 so that leaves 126 free.

The number of IP's allow is deterimed by the group that issues ip's to you. Therefore you mask all but what you are allow.

Sub masks are a little too tricky to brief here. Cisco.com has reading on masking and subnetting.

Knowing the IP/mask number in both human form and binary form is handy for calculation. Critical if it was network planning, handy if it was network troubleshooting.

The IP and mask are both 32-bit except if you go on IPv6 setup. IPs, for the purpose of simplify human understanding are segmented into A B C classes, but it became a nuisance if you finished studying introductory courses.

One popular corporate subnet range is 24.x.x.x with a basic mask of 255.0.0.0 anyone knows a little bit can say it is class A with 255^3 machines in one range, everything is right except one range is wrong. Putting 255.192.0.0 in pure binary and put a proposed class A IP in pure binary, AND them bit by bit and you got the sub network octet range label. All masks in binary form exibits a simple regular expression of ^1+0+$ no exceptions.
