Texas has probably the toughest drunk driving laws. A man was sentenced just last week to 25 years in prison, of which he will have to serve 75% of to be eligible for parole. This was for his 3rd DWI conviction.

Oh, and if you have an accident while drunk driving and kill someone, you don't get off with a vehicular manslaughter charge....you get charged with 2ND DEGREE MURDER. Granted though, noone has yet been convicted of that, so far it has always been plea bargained down to 3rd degree or VM.

I've seen people in court get 40 years for third offense DWI, where their drunken state while driving caused their car to kill someone (manslaughter--what a joke to call murder such).

But those are few and far between: ever hear murder by DWI can net someone LESS time in prison than killing someone with a gun or knife?

But not long after their first day in prison, they quickly find God and an "inmate lawywer", and they begin the dedicatedly tireless effort at generating mountains of legal paperwork---99% of which TAXPAYERS cover the costs for.

They and other guilty dangerous convicted prison "residents" work like honeybees, filing legal motions for appeal, aiming for another shot at proving innocence; others file for a sentence reduction.

The more wealthier (and yes, they are a few of them), quietly dole out the $$$$ for a "deal"---either one worked out by crooked laywers or even a bought pardon by the state governor or even the President himself.

And do you want another scary fact? Each day, thousands of prison thugs, many with educational skills below the sixth grade, manage to see their years of legal paperwork building allow them FREEDOM......a sweet thing to see happen.....until they rob, molest, rape or kill someone.

Arrest, suspended license and fine is the minimum.
You can have your license revoked and prison for repeat offenses. Also if you injure someone drunk driving and they sue you cannot claim bankruptcy.

In Costa Rica they give the death penalty.
