hmmm.. i've made one before.
i too am an IT student (graduated last year actually)
my group and i made a vehicle reservation system for our school.
past batches of IT from our school has also made a library system.. it's pretty useful too (but isn't implemented yet in my school)
i've also finished a business intelligence system for my school, where i produce statistics and charts on the various enrollments, revenues, and students that my school has had per year, month, etc. (it's up to the user to provide the necessary filters)
enrollment system, well that's pretty big (in my opinion).. but also great (i like challenges)
the library system and the enrollment system is both complicated, so it's really up to your friend.
i can't say any system isn't complicated for that matter.
i recommend something that could be put to use at his/her school.. or at least ideally would be useful. :D
my other classmates made a student portal system.. it's where students could log in to check their grades, class standings, etc. and also, maybe an instructor's portal.. where they could check their students' grades, their attendance, etc.
the rest is up to your friend's imagination
good luck! :D
