Usually you start the baby out on baby rice/cereal. However, if you are planning on feeding the baby jar baby food, it is recommened to start out with veggies. Fruit is commonly liked by babies b/c it is sweet to them. The veggies first will usually promote them to eat veggies now and later in life.
Good luck :)

Babies aren't really suppose to start solids until 6 months of age. If he's 5 mos and seems really ready, start SLOWLY, not even offering every day yet. Keep in mind that solids at this age are pretty much just for fun and practice and should NOT replace breastmilk.
Per La Leche League, the best first food to offer is mashed bananas. Th is is because the taste and texture will be a little closer to that of breastmilk and they are more likely to enjoy it. Avocados and sweet potatoes are good choices after that.
Breastfed babies are more likely to enjoy a wide variety of tastes when they start solid foods because they are used to the taste of mom's milk changing based on what she eats. Breastmilk is sweet and that's what they are used to, so starting with bananas is good.
Start new foods no closer than 5 days apart so you can watch for any reactions. Read the info below on starting solids.

Start with baby cereal. Rice, barley, etc. Just pick one, and go with it. Don't introduce more than one new food a week - if there's allergies, it's easier to find them. Start with a tablespoon once or twice a day - when it works for both you and baby. Once you've got one cereal down pat, start another one.
You can add jarred foods around 6 months or older. Start with the green veggies. If you start with fruit or sweet veggies like carrots or sweet potatoes - because they taste REALLY good to babies, they'll want ONLY those, and it'll be harder to get them to try anything else.
Feel free to change the texture of foods as the baby shows you he's ready. When he gets a couple of teeth and learns to pick things up for himself, let him have some Cheerios for a snack. Let him have small pieces of banana too.

No recipes at this age. You should start with rice cereal or infant oatmeal. Choose one and follow the directions by adding water, formula or breast milk. Start with one tablespoon the first day and gradually increase. Don't try any other foods until he can tolerate this.
After he can tolerate these you can introduce fruits (bananas, prunes, peaches, pears) and veggies (sweet potatoes, carrots, peas). You should only try one food at a time and over a course of a few days to make sure he doesn't have any allergic reactions. I recommend starting with veggies first. Fruit is very sweet and he may prefer that and be picky with veggies. I introduced veggies first and all 3 of my kids have never had a problem eating them. You can start these at about 6 months old. Remember that most of his nutrition is still coming from breast milk right now. Add these foods slowly.
Here are a few links that should be able to help. Good luck!

I breast fed all my 7 children for 2 years each to wash down their food. Dessert you could say. I fed them all the food I made for myself, just mushed up. Mash some carrots, potatooes, fruit, none of this processed food. Anything you eat, healthy and natural can be fed to the baby except honey of course. This way you'll not have to spend money on baby food. Get your little one used to regular food so s/he won't have all these food hang ups and keep up with the breast feeding.

Your baby is on first stage foods. You can buy them in the grocery stores. I like Gerber. I make my grandbabies fresh carrots, and peas. I put enough in to store for a couple of days and I freeze some for later. The baby does not have back teeth so it's hard for the baby to chew food up very finely. Soft foods is good for the babies stomach. Buy fruits, cereals, and veggies. Buy Gerber Juices also. Gerber has a large verity of baby foods, and products. Beech-nut baby foods have a good selection of foods also.

The AAP recommends breastfeeding for the 1st 6 months, inspite of the reality that the Committee on food says you may initiate solids at 4 months if the infant is waiting. At that age, many toddlers nonetheless have a reflex the place their tongue pushes out hence they don't save any food of their mouths. it fairly is an illustration they are not waiting yet. once you do introduce solids, you ought to introduce a million food at a time and then wait 2-3 days to establish the infant has no unfavorable reaction to the food. Older generations and different cultures have assorted distinctive methods of doing issues and mutually because it fairly is genuine they did that with their very own little ones and that all of them survived, we've found out issues considering that then. We took lead out of dental fillings and wall paint, asbestos out of homes, require infants to holiday in automobile seats, and so on. cases exchange and parenting adjustments with it. i don't envy you the effective line you ought to stroll of respecting her evaluations (or a minimum of pretending to - lol) yet nonetheless putting forward which you are the mummy and you will do it your way. you ought to use the pediatrician because of the fact the scape goat - "The physician stated we ought to..." in the experience that your husband could step up assist you and help set the obstacles with your MIL, that could help lots too. And if all that fails, submit to in ideas that her little ones did stay to tell the tale too. you will be able to ought to %. your battles, fantastically if she would be able to be babysitting. solid luck.

My girls started on the rice and cereal mixture as soon as they began looking for the bottle within 2 hours. Keep it bland and please do not try any vegetables or meat baby food too soon because you have to keep in mind you have not given this baby anything but breast milk for his entire life, his delicate stomach has to adjust. While he might enjoy all of the new tastes, it is his body that has to process them. Good luck and God Bless.
