You can read while lying down. I have never heard anyone say that you should not do that. Maybe they just don't want you reading when you are supposed to be asleep.

I remember the answer to that question. It had something to do with muscles (tiny) that was involved in the focusing of the lenses of the eyes in reading.

It worked triple harder when you are lying on your back eg reading upwards. There were several groups more that did the work.

On the other hand, the optimum (less fatiguing) for the eye muscles in focusing the lenses was downwards.

Our teacher was an eye doctor who said "well, what do you know, your mother was right after all" and we all laughed and someone said "where were you when I was reading while lying down, now it is too late (classmate had thick eyeglasses)
