The illumination is not what they seek.
Flies generally tend to congregate around a feature that is several feet away from the floor (and consequently away from the reach of many natural predators). In a house this is likely to be around a light or something similar. This habit means that they are likely to meet other flies that may be in the area, which will probably lead to a little fly lovin' and hey presto, before you know it, the little love-flies have a brood of their own on the way!
Aint procreation grand!!
Anyways, to deter them, you could try spraying the light with some fly spray to make the area less appealing as a 'pick-up joint' for the little buzzy buggers ;-)

as the light is in the centre of the room it would make it the closest point to anywhere else in the room where a fly might find something irresistable like a fresh turd, or a pile of vomit, should you be that way inclined

Force of habit, or they could be practicing for when it's night and the light is on. Maybe they are just doing laps to keep in shape.

Possibly because they don't have watches or can't tell the time? Maybe it's too cold outside or maybe they are Australian flies and think it is night time?

Its cold out there. Why fly around in the cold if they can do it in the warmth of the house.
Try washing your lampshade in a little disinfectant
