The alcohol is dangerous too - we should maybe forbid drinking so that you don't get drunk. The gases that go out from your car are just as dangerous for your health (and mine too) - maybe we should just forbid cars. And if you don't have a car you know that the chances are that your electricity plant is just as dangerous for your health - perhaps you don't want to turn on the light.
My point is that you should not talk about forbidding things that you don't like or understand in others. If they smoke in your face and pollute your lungs just talk about getting them a private room where they can smoke without bothering other people.
My point is also that it's not always about how long your life will be - it is also about the quality of life. Some people like smoking just as you might like driving your car. You don't have to understand that - just to accept it.

How is it up to you or some government organization to regulate what people do to themselves? Perhaps I don't like the soda you drink, it will make you fat and kill you eventually. Should I outlaw that too?
That is a very slippery slope you are on. That thought process eventually leads to a totalitarian society.

With that argument--that things which cause cancer should be banned, then we would have to give up alcohol because of liver problems. We would also have to give up artificial sweetners because they cause cancer. There are lots of things on the shelves that can cause cancer, so do we have to give them all up? Are you going to take away my Diet Coke because it has aspertame in it? It causes cancer.
We have free will, which means we have the ability to make our own decisions. If someone chooses to smoke, then that is their choice. They understand the consequences. If they regret it later, that is their problem. Don't take away my Diet Coke and beer just because they are going to be sorry later.

It is not 'ironic' that the government wont ban cigarettes. Please learn the meaning of the word.
Secondly, the great thing about living in a free country is that you have the right to do things which aren't good for you. You'd soon winge if your TV watching was rationed, or your fast food consumption restricted.

Government should never take the stance that citizen's cannot think for themselves. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it should be illegal. Of course, you are correct about the taxes.

It is a persons choice to do so, what about alcohol and it effects socially, and physically(liver damage). So, we can not blame anyone, but the person whom chooses to use it, the Govt. doesn't force any cigarettes down peoples throats.
