The word computer is not an abbreviation. It comes from the root verb "compute", which means to calculate. The word computer itself is defined as: "A programmable device that performs mathematical calculations and logical operations, especially one that can process, store and retrieve large amounts of data very quickly."
The idea that the word computer is an abbreviation, and its usage as a backronym stated in the above answer is wrong.
