YES,BRICK IT UP AND DON`T FORGET TO PUT AN AIR BRICK IN ON 3RD ROW OF BRICKS ,CAP THE CHIMNEY OF WITH ONE OF THOSE CAPS THAT SLOT INTO THE CHIMNEY POT THEY ARE MUSHROOM SHAPED AND LET AIR INTO CHIMNEY AND KEEP RAIN OUT,IF YOU DON`T FIT ONE WATER WILL GET INTO THE CHIMNEY AND CAUSE BLACK MOULD PROBLEMS

If your olf fire was on a Chimney breast then you will need to have an air vent in it's place to stop any damp. make sure that the top of the chimney has also got some sort of mesh over it as well. The reason i say this is because if a bird falls down the chimney and dies, you will end up with loads of flys..because of magets

did you mean to say fireplace?

If so, does the fireplace chimney vent other units like a water heater or furnace?

If it operates all alone just for the fireplace then I would recommend blocking the chimney at the top first (try a paving stone held in place with low expansion foam for a good air seal.

Only after it is weather tight should you block off the room side of the chimney.

You must have an air vent if your chimney is open, or you will cause a build up of damp in the stack.

you can block hole, but you have to put vent brick in chimney so it can vent

I think so yes. Maybe it depends on how you block it though. Are tehre any airvents in the room? If so, then go for it.
