There can be alot to buy if you dont have friends or relies that can pass on unwanted stuff so I started buying things just after the first trimester, that way I could spread out the cost and take my time researching to make sure I not only got good value but products that were safe and made to or better than the required standards.

The pregnancy is established now and i think you could start shopping with no worries! Personally i wouldnt advise it before 12 weeks, but at 17 weeks all should be well.
As far as a pram is concerned, you dont want to leave it too late and not be able to find what you want, so i suggest you look around, and at catalogues and online, and decide what would suit your lifestyle best, then go shopping for it when you are about 6 months. Think about things like where you are going to keep it, and will it go through the door etc.
My first baby i had a huge hall like a room and i bought a s/h big silver cross pram and i loved it! It was like pushing a rolls royce! I sold it on for what i had paid in the end. My second baby i was in a smaller house, but i had a cute pram that had pastel pictures of engines and little house and trees on the lining.
Good luck with the pregnancy!

I understand the superstitous part I'm currently nine months pregnant and as the doctor said he can be here any day now, and i am kicking myself in the butt for not doing it earlier. If you know anyone who has had a baby in the last year or so and it turns out they have a bunch of neutral coloured clothes or if you are having the same as they did you can find yourself with more clothes then you ever imagined. As far as big things you may want to wait until around 6 months or so maybe longer to get a crib, stroller, car seat all of this and its possible some of it you may get at a baby shower from relatives and friends. As far as the pram if theres one you see and love then get it it couldnt hurt to get that and have it now. Also one of my friends had a very good idea when she was pregnant since diapers are so expensive is that at each paycheck ( well payday ) she bought one package of diapers that way it wasn't when they baby got there try and run to buy some when she ran out. If you decide to do that remember to buy different sizes and the NB ( new born ) size they dont stay in or fit in that long and the worst that could happen is to end up with a whole bunch of diapers that are to small so think different sizes maybe a few in the size up from newborn etc.. Also remember a baby goes through on average at least 12 diapers a day sometimes more. Good luck with your pregnancy and little one and trust me at times it may go slow but my pregnancy has flown by. =]

My daughter told us Christmas eve that she will be having her first baby in July.
She had her 12 week scan on Monday so I have started to bid on E>bay for a moses basket.
In my day it was considered unlucky to geta pram before birth but I did.
I think it best to buy a few things every week as it can be very exspensive if you leave it to the last minute and very tiring to shop.

I'm exactly the same as you, I'm 20 weeks, and don't want to buy anything in case i jinx it, or in case something goes wrong and Ive got to pack it away. But Ive decided this weekend that I'm going to make a start, things are so expensive and if you buy something every week by the time its born you should have everything, also you don't want to leave it so late that your having to try and shop at 8 months when your so big all you want to do is lye on the sofa. Now is a good time to start i think.

You need to buy somethings before the birth, but is there a family member that could keep these things at their house.
You are past the risky part of the pregnancy, so you could start whenever finances allow. Maybe buy something per month. Do not dismiss e-bay and second hand shops if money is tight.
Good luck.

If you have someone around who will be throwing you a baby shower, wait until after that (but save the money now) because often you'll get some of those things from relatives/friends at your shower.
If that's not your particular case, as soon as you find things you know you'll like. Make sure you have a carseat before you have the baby. Depending on where you are you might not be able to take the baby home without one.

After your first trimester, the chance for miscarriage is very significantly reduced. It is best to buy everything you need for the baby before it arrives, but it's up to you when. If you want to buy things now, but wait on big things like a pram and crib, that's fine. Just buy blankets, toys, clothes, etc.

I didn't buy anything until i was 7 months pregnant and got the pram delivered at about 38 weeks pregnant as i didn't want to tempt fate as i had a previous stillbirth.

about now would be a good idea on thinking about ordering the big things like cot/moses basket and pram. most shops will keep hold of them untill nearer the birth just in case you are superstitous. i'd buy bits and bobs from after my 12-14 week scan.
