Apple's Powerbook is hard to match ... by any standards.

Lenovo (ex IBM) makes the best Tablet PCs available.
HP makes the best Media Center PCs on the market.
Sony Vaio's have the most phenomenal graphics of any of them.

Decide on what you want to use it for & go from there.

Easy. Go to pcworld.com. There you can see their recommendations of the top 5 or 10 lap tops they have tested. Also answer questions, on what to look for and all that good stuff. Once you got your heart set on which one you want to buy, then spend some time on the internet searching for the cheapest one. Use pricegrabber.com or ebay.com or amazon.com or many other search engines. I saved big money when I bought my scanner with the price of $499 to $343 from pagecomputer.com. It was cheaper than Ebay. You have to read between the lines on some tests. Examples, on the disk drives if you read the notes you will see that drive 3 is 4 seconds faster downloading than drive 4. But there is an 70 dollar difference. I bought the cheaper one as I am not worried by COUPLE OF SECONDS difference.

ALIENWARE are the outright best

Followed by DELL, Toshiba & SONY

Whatever you get, make sure it uses a TOUCHPAD style mouse controller, rather than a Trackpoint (little rubber joystick in middle of the key board).
