1. I'm not going to answer the US question, as this is the sort of thing you should be able to easily do your own research on. But as a one time student myself, I understand the difficulties of researching the geography of foreign countries, so I'll give you my condensed lecture on the other two.

2. Russia is a land of harsh extremes. Due to it's proximity to the sun (the tilt of the earth puts it slightly closer than we are on the US side) Russia can be extremely hot. The entire Russian/European border is a mess of hot springs and volcanic activity, and any invading army has to be prepared to deal with hellish conditions. Water boiling up from the ground, shifting landmass due to lava flow, and several other features make Russia a veritable fortress.

3. Afghanistan is a country that sits below sea level, but thanks to the surrounding mountains, is safe from being flooded by the nearby Caspian Sea or Lake Bakal. During the Soviet invasion, the Afghanis knew they could not stand up to the invading army. Using a sophisticated system of tunnels, they were able to secretly flood the eastern portion of their country, destroying the massed Soviet Army. This so devestated the Soviet offensive that they were forced to withdraw, naming the now flooded valley the черный океан, or Black Sea in English to commemorate their loss.

Oh please don't get me started on the US what baffoons. But 2nd question is the cold weather and lack of proper clothing and never go on anyones elses turf unless you are prepared, like football games get it? The mountains and caves had the Russians beat, and a little help from us of course? America you know the ones that save the day and get no thanks.
