A closed recycling bin is in the shape of a rectangular box. Find the height of the bin if its length is 18 feet, its width is 8 feet, and its surface area is 496 square feet.

496 = 2(18)(8) + 2(8)h + 2(18)h
496 = 288 + 16h + 36h
208 = 52h
h = 4

The surface area is bottom area, top area and the 4 faces of the rectangular prism or box. Now, the top and bottom are equal to each other. From the given dimensions, the total area for bottom and top is 2x18x8 = 288 sq ft.

Now two of the faces has an area dimension of 2 x 18 x H and the other 2 faces has an area dimension of 2 x 8 x H, where H is the height.

But the entire area is 496 = 288 + 36H + 16H, Doing the algebra, you get H = (496 -288)/52 or H= 4 feet.

surface area= 2(lb+bh+hl)=496 sq. ft.
so, this is a linear eqn in one unknown, namely h..
we get 2h(l+b)=208, i.e, h x 26= 104..
this leads us to the answer, h= 4ft.
