It created the "Lost Generation" who were mentally scarred from the most horrible war the world had ever seen. It changed the view of war from a valiant, noble rite of passage to a horrible, nightmarish aberration.

WWI was particularly grisly as the technology had outpaced medical science and the debut of machine guns, poison gas and tanks raised the body count and injury levels to unimaginable levels.
