The truth of the matter is that scientists have differing theories and do not currently agree on the exact date.
The are many theories about when the Hebrews left Egypt during the Exodus, dating from the reign of the Eighteenth Dynasty female pharaoh Hatshepsut (15th Century BC) up to the reign of the Nineteenth Dynasty pharaoh Ramesses II (12th Century BC). Most Biblical scholars favor the latter date because of the mention of the city Pi-Ramesses in the book of Exodus. That anchors the story in a particular point in history.
In the records of ancient Egyptian archeology, there is little evidence for the Exodus account of the Henrews leaving Egypt and the resulting destruction of the Egyptian Army in the Red Sea. One other major ireason that could explain the lack of records supporting the Exodus account is that the Nile Delta (Lowe Egypt, as Egyptologists call the area; or Land of Goshen,as the Bible calls it) has been flooded with many, many feet of silt over the centuries. And it is a damper climate than the rest of Egypt, so there is not the level of preservation as one would find in Upper Egypt where it is largely desert. Perhaps the evidence is there, but still undiscovered as yet. Or perhaps it rotted away millenia ago. We just don't know.
However, in my own opinion, the huge volcanic explosion that destroyed the civilization on the island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea in the 12th Century BC (which is believed to be the basis for Plato's account of the lost island of Atlantis) would account for some of the unusual weather patterns described as the "Ten Plagues of Egypt." Other scientists have also found logical explanations for the Ten Plagues, ranging from a bad Nile flood during the Inundation season to an outbreak of anthrax, to explain the phenomenon described in the Bible.
In the answer above given by danielle_Z, the year 2448 BC would correspond to the end of the Old Kngdom and the resulting chaotic period that followed as the First Intermediate Period (Seventh - Tenth Dynasties). There are simply no records in ancient Egypt to support that much earlier date, and it doesn't take into account of the building of the city of Pi-Ramesses which was constructed over 1000 years later.
Last, I would like to comment that even if the Hebrews were serving as builders for the pharaoh, the odds are that they were paid conscripted workers, not slaves, just as the builders of the Pyramids were valuable PAID laborers. Since this is centuries before the invention of money, the Hebrew construction workers would have been paid in provided housing, food and other necessities, and excellent medical care. Just as the builders of the Pyrammids, the workers of Deir El-Medina who built the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, and the construction workers of the other great monuments of ancient Egypt for centuries were all well provided for.
As Exodus tells the story, the initial triggering problem was that the Hebews wanted to leave in the middle of whatever construction project they were involved in, and go out into the desert to worship Jehovah (Yahweh). That and connected other events led Moses to challenge Pharaoh, and eventually led to the Exodus of the Hebrews from the Land of Goshen.
And the rest is history....

The Exodus is dated on the fifteenth day of the Jewish month of Nisan in the year 2448 B.C.E.
Passover is tied to the "Ten Plagues" that came upon Egypt leading up the Exodus of the Jews (Y'tziat Mitzraim). The Exodus from Egypt is said to have occurred on the fifteenth of Nisan in the year 2448 B.C.E. A document called the "Ipuwer Papyrus," discovered in Egypt in the 1800s, is said to detail a series of catastrophes that struck Egypt in ancient times and that are thought to be connected to events in the Book of Exodus.
