Pacal... the king of Palenque, Mexico, was a Maya King around the year 800? He was buried in a tomb beneath the big pyramid at that site.
The tomb was discovered in 1951, after noticing some floor stones that had holes in them. The stones were removed and this revealed a secret stairway leading down... inside the pyramid.
It took 2 years to reach the bottom because you can only work in the jungle for a few months per year (rain, heat, insects, farming schedule of local workers). 1952 !
Five sacrificial victims were found at the bottom of the stairs.
Finally a chamber with a sarcophagus was discovered by Mexican archaeologist Dr. Alberto Ruz. Inside was a skeleton that had 6 toes.

The artwork on the sarcophagus lid became the subject of one of Eric Von Daniken's chapters in his book, "Chariots of the Gods", where he erroneously claimed that Pacal was an ancient astronaut, with foot on the pedal of a rocket, and flames were coming from the bottom. (A load of bull, based on NO facts at all)

Later on, Floyd Lounsbury deciphered the hieroglyphs. This was Pacal ascending to heaven on the cornstalk of life, with many roots in the earth. His twisted foot, with 6 toes, turned unnaturally outwards.

First off, six toes isn't a myth, people are actually born with them.
Second who would ever make up a legend of a person with six toes? that would be one boring legend.

My father was born with six toes on each foot. He had two pinky toes on each. He had them removed when he was older.
He is the only person that I have ever heard of having them though. If he were still alive I wouldn't even share this, he'd be so embarrassed.
