In Jem (80's TV cartoon), was Synergy actually her mother's spirit?

I remember watching this episode of Jem from way back and I've always remembered the plot because it was so tragic. It was a special episode about the story of Synergy, and it was revealed that Jem's father created Synergy modelled after Jem's mother (or her spirit was chanelled or something like that) after she died on a plane crash.

I've searched about Jem, but this backstory (which would seem pretty important from the sounds of it, don't you think?) is hardly mentioned in a lot of summaries. Am I hallucinating this episode? It's been so long that I'm not sure whether I just dreamed it up as a kid.

No - I remember this too - I am not sure if it was a plane crash though - I don't remember that part.

But synergy was definitely her mother's spirit.

Sure, that episode exists. Its called "Out of the Past". Unfortunately, its one of the later episodes, never officially released on DVD like the episodes from Seasons 1 and 2 and Part 1 of Season 3. If you do a search on the episode title + jem, you should be able to find several episode synopses. It IS an important episode, though not well remembered by most...I think b/c it was toward the end of the series.

Synergy is not really supposed to be the spirit of Jerrica's and Kimber's mom...there was no supernatural plot line. Emmett, her father, created Synergy in Jacqui's likeness (looks and demeanor). It was said that it would be too painful to make her be EXACTLY like Jacqui so he tweaked Synergy a little so that they were simply similar. And yes, Jacqui died in a plane crash (pretty heavy stuff for a kids' show, but an awesome episode).
