I love nature, particularly birds and flowers. In our town, there are a few open spaces that I frequent, the botanical gardens being one of them.
Last week, as I was passing by the side of the big pond in the garden, admiring the roses, tulips, mums, and other beautiful flowers, thanking God, in my mind, for all these creations, I was startled to notice a strange sight among the wading swans in the pond. What seemed to be a human hand could be clearly seen rising from the water, and waving wildly as if to draw my attention. Though my thoughts froze, I was naturally drawn to the edge of the water to have a closer look. Yes, it was a human hand that I had seen and multiple emotions filled my mind.
I looked around and found no one nearby. The hand wasnt too far away from the edge. A bit of quick thinking and I could find an abandoned barge nearby, with a long pole inside. Instinctively, I ran and pulled out the pole from the barge with all my strength, though I was panting from anxiety and the stamina the effort required.
I threw the pole on the water, holding on to one end, and splashed it near the hand which by now seemed to be losing its strength. With a silent prayer to God to give me enough strength, I lifted the pole with all my strength and hit the hand with the pole. After a brief struggle, I could feel the person at the other end try to snatch at the pole. I felt my strength draining away when the hand started pulling at the pole, almost dragging me into the water.
God must have heard my prayers! A man who was strongly built, then came upon the spot (was he God in human form, my thoughts raced despite the crisis). He quickly took stock and both of us shouted at the figure to hold on tight.
It was a struggle, but the unfortunate hand did manage to hold on to the pole, and with strong tugs by the two of us, we were able to pull the person in the pond ashore. The swans fluttered away, with all the commotion going on.
It was a boy about 10 years old, who had slipped into the pond. He was almost unconsious when we could pull him ashore. I thanked my school for giving me lessons in first aid, and with help from Jim (the man who came to help), we were able to get some of the water from out of the boy's lungs.
Jim meantime had called 911 from his cellphone. While waiting for the ambulance to come, we covered the boy with whatever clothers we could find. His body was cold, but he was breathing. Thank God!
The ambulance came shortly along with a paramedic, and the boy was bundled to the ER.
Next day we came to know that the boy (whose name we learnt was Jack) had survived the ordeal and recovering well.
We were on the local TV news that day, Jim and me. Not that it mattered, but it was something that I would remember for the rest of my life!

At first i panicked. I thought someone was drowning. My first thought was to dive in and help the person, but I didn't know anything about water rescue. Looking around I could not see anyone. In desparation I started to scream for help, when I noticed a canoe that was beached. I ran to the canoe and pushed it into the water and started to paddle to the person. When I reached him, he caught hold of the canoe side and was gasping for air. I didn't have the strenght to pull him in so i gave him a rope that was in the canoe and he wrapped it around himself. Slowly I paddled back to land.

As it turned out the person was a keeper on the gardens and was doing his routine work in the pond when he developed sever stomach cramps and wasn't able to swim back. In gratidude, I was made honourary keeper on the garden and now I can visit anytime and got a garden named after me.

Hope it works for you :)
