Many criminal offenses could be considered a Tort. For instance, the crime of battery, (striking another person) can also be an intentional tort. The difference is twofold: the crime of battery is handled by the criminal courts, and punishment is administered by the state/county/city. The standard of proof required to convict is beyond a reasonable doubt. The intentional tort of battery is handled in civil court, and the result will be (if found liable) is monetary damages. The standard of proof is less as well, in most states it is preponderance of the evidence.
