I've asked that question to myself alot when I was younger since I was right out of school, pregnant, married, and putting him through school. I've tried many ventures since I have big dreams. None of them worked until I found one recently I am a part of that is International and has changed my life. You should check out my profile and email me though because Yahoo doesn't like for us to relay links. Good Luck!

It depends on what you're good at and what you want to do with your life.
I don't have a degree, but I've made as much as 60000 a year doing various levels of computer support. Jobs like that are few and far between unless you specialize (like SAP or Oracle crap) - in my case, I was a contractor working a shift no one else would work. It was the highest paying job anyone in my family has ever had (and my Dad has a degree), but it was only for two years, and I didn't have insurance or any sort of benefits.
The reality is that no matter what degree you get, employers look at that piece of paper as a sign that you can actually finish something that you started. It opens up a lot of jobs that are other wise unavailable or that require years of experience to get into.
There are a lot of very high paying IT jobs, but there are also a lot of people with those skills. Let's say you and Some Guy have the same skill set, same years doing the job and Some Guy also has a degree in ... oh... let's say Underwater Basket Weaving. Unless you make a hell of an impression, Some Guy is probably going to get the job. If there are two jobs, Some Guy may very well get hired at a higher pay rate than you, especially if the interviewer or hiring manager has a degree. God help you if it's from the same university as Some Guy
I don't like it either, but that's the unfortunate way of the world.

I'm not, and I have a degree. There are a lot of people whom I work with who've never gone to college, some haven't even finished high school and they run their own business.
Of course, the field is construction. I found out how useless my degree in CAD design was when I found companies will hire Barbie dolls who've only worked with Corel Draw.
The only reason I can't sell my non-degreed skills here (graphic design, illustration and cartooning) is becuase I'm in the wrong area with no market. But you really don't need a degree for most types of income if you're innovative in how you market yourself, and you have the skill that's needed. College recruiters will shove it down your throat that you'll be stuck working at Burger King your whole life if you don't go to school. What they don't tell you is that you still have a 65% chance of working at Burger King after you graduate, and on top of that, you will owe 30K or more to the goverment and have no way of paying it back.
Trades that don't require a degree but pay well
Construction
Tattoos
Art and Illustration (Not corporate graphic design, it's a racket)
Catering
Small, non franchise restaurants
Welding
Woodworking
Air Conditioning
Software development
Programming
Web Design
Cumputer repair and maintenence
Note that a learning curve is required, and most of these are self-employed positions. Self employment is really your best bet, a goal to strive for. Even middle management positions are paying lower and lower these days.

Most independent truck drivers make over 100,000 dollars a year, of course they have sixty thousand in bills too. College doesn't guarantee high saleries, its just that most employers want the organized minds that college produces. Heavy equipment operators make large saleries too, and sit it air conditioned cabs while doing it.

I don't have a college degree either. I wish I could find a way to earn 24,000 a year without a college degree. I doubt you can make 100,000 without a college degree.

hey,
you can do as i did: go back to school in the evening or find online courses to get that degree. I am 49 now and i am still learning! I went up in my company from an ordinary guy in the crowd towards a manager function.I also created my own company with no limits in earning possibilities. It's possible, but you have to put your mind to it.Good luck and patience!Luc
