Freemasonry has deep roots in American history, and both George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt were Masons.
As the name suggests, Freemasonry started out with stone-cutters centuries ago, and these artisans, ("free" tradesmen only, masters of their craft-- apprentices would be excluded) banded together for mutual benefit, a sort of early labor union. They could discuss their trade, agree on prices, and through unity control their own futures.
As time went on, the Freemasons were separated from their labor roots, and were now wealthy gentlemen, hence many of the most influential people of the 18th century had brought Freemasonry with them from England.
The ever-seeing eye is found on our currency, just look at a dollar bill. There are also many other symbols of Freemasonry in our governement, even the buildings in Washington DC.
I don't believe in any of the conspiracy theories about the Freemasons, and I feel that America has benefited from their presence, if not than remained unharmed at the very least.
The Freemasons are just an organization that has somes secrets, (they are relatively open compared to Skull and Bones) and naturally, people will inveitably jump to conclusions.
But I could be wrong, and I never rule anything out, and conspiracies are fun to mull over.... who knows, maybe you'll find out something no one else knew about.
Best of luck.

The Masons are a secret order that many of the founders of the US were members of. It began as a way to spread brotherhood and charity though it is said to have changed since. Since I'm not a Mason and they don't talk about the group I can't say what it is like now.
The designer of Washington DC was a Frenchman named Pierre Charles L'Enfant who was said to be a Mason. This is attributed to his planning. Many of the avenues are laid out in the form of pentagrams, a symbol of Masonry.
The Pentagon, which was designed and built many years later is also in the form of a pentagram, adding to the rumors of Masons having a foothold in the US government.
The fact that the Pentagram is also a symbol of Satanism and Wicca, has put it at odds with Christianity, which is already suspicious of Freemasonry.
The power and influence of Masons is only rumored and it is unlikely they have as much power as its detractors claim.
