New York is now one of the safest large cities in the country. Yes its inner cities are notorious, but only if you are there after dark and obviously lost and an outsider. I[ve never had a problem at night or even on the subway late at night.

It is the center of the world and a fantastic place to visit. There are people who will target tourists for petty theft, so just be smart, don't make it obvious, keep your guide book in your backpack on the subway. Believe it or not New Yorkers are usually glad to help with directions. We get lost half the time as well.

NO, I hang in the Village and there is never a problem down there

Stay to the city, dont go to the Bronx

the crime rate right now is the lowest in any major city in the world, it is a great place to hang, you get the new and the old put together

Just like ANY city or even town there are areas that have higher crime. But millions of tourists visit NYC every year and all is fine.

NYC has worked hard to become a safer city. But it also takes some common sense just like in ANY place.

It depends where you are in NYC. You don't want to walk through the park in the middle of the night, but you could stay out all night in the Village and be fine. Per capita, it's a very safe city.
