The original caste system as it was envisaged implied that each person would go to a profession on the basis of his svadharma which implied aptitude depending upon abilities and temprament. However, as time went on vested interest twisted the caste system according to birth and it became a vested interest.

A management consultant stated:-

"An excellent plumber is infinitely more admirable than in incompetent philospher. The society which scorns excellence in plumbing because its a humble activity and tolerates shodiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water. Excellence is not confined to fancy white collar activities."

World expert on lateral thinking Edward De Bono has said that just because you have solved a complicated problem is no guarantee that you shall be able to solve a simple problem- Albert Einstein had problems managing his money and understanding income tax. The issue is- how to practically ensure respect for the common man in every job - the caste system will get taken care of automatically.

Distinguishing between talent and non-talents, the book "First, break all the rules" gives examples of waiters, bar tenders, housekeepers, nurses, data entry operators etc as to how the best were different from the rest even in minor jobs and were compensated highly without necessarily being promoted . The best example I liked was that of a police officer(performer) getting paid more than his sergeant(boss) because he was a better performer than that guy a man manager and there were different compensations for different roles by a process called broadbanding. Building on the basic example of Sachin Tendulkar/ Saurav Ganguly, it gives several examples of how the best performer(Sachin) does not necessarily become the best man manager( Saurav-captain) but must be rewarded because he is the best performer. That way you can add prestige and money at each level in a company without necessarily promoting the person if he does not have aptitude for vertical promotion.

The Americans have a system of publicly ackowledging and highlighting the best performers and compensating them handsomely without promoting them(Many of them don't want promotion as man management is not everybody's cup of tea)

Citing relevant examples(Sunil Gavaskar's son, Raj Kapoor's sons), one should point out that talent is not hereditary and one should be rewared according to one's natural talent and performance and not birth as pointed out above. The caste system represents distored thinkng more than anything else.
