The basic of ingsoc was that you believe whatever they tell you to believe, and if they tell you that yesterday never happened then it never did. They mute the past.
After you read this book you have to listen to radiohead's Hail to the Thief, they go great.

ingsoc is the government agency which takes charge of recorded history. What it does is meticulously goes through all historical and news records, modifying and "correcting" dates, names, and formats to go along with the party's agenda. That's it, nothing more.
