Oooo, don't go to a pet store. The one's that sell pets for profit are only there for the profit, not the animals. Most of the big chains are partnering with shelters now and host adoption fairs.
The best solution would be to work with one of your local shelters. SPCA's or no-kill shelters, check your local phone books. The reason I say this is all shelters require the potential pet owner to fill out an application and they do 'checks' (i.e. if potential pet owner rents, they verify with the landlord pets are ok). And puppies go FAST, so even with the SPCA, they will probably be adopted out before their 'time' is up.
Please don't put an ad in the paper "Free puppies to good home" or set up a box at the grocery store to pass them out, these dogs end up at a puppy mill, a home with kids that will cut off their tail, or dumped in the end.
Take them to a shelter and if you can, give that shelter a donation to help off set the costs. Then get your dog spayed. Many shelters offer low cost spaying or can give you a coupon to use at a local vet. Also, please make sure the puppies are weaned before you take them in.
Good luck!

If your female was spayed, a stray could not have knocked her up! The animal shelters do not charge a fee for drop off of animals. Are the puppies weaned? They need to stay with the mother for 6 weeks MINIMUM, but I would suggest around 8 weeks before you should find homes for them. Have you tried advertising...put up signs in local pet stores, pet hospitals, etc. Try running an ad on Craigslist as well. Let people at work know you have puppies that need homes. Take pictures to put on the signs, if people can see the puppies they may be more likely to call.

Please do not take the puppies to an animal shelter.
Shelters keep animals for a certain number of days and then if they are not adopted, the animal is destroyed. There are groups who will help you to find homes for the puppies. As mentioned there is the SPCA. I know of two other groups. These two are A.R.K. (Animals Rescued with Kindness) and H.A.R.P.S.(this is also an animal rescue group. Both A.R.K. ahd H.A.R.P.S. have a network of volunteers who act as foster parents for the dogs/puppies. The dogs/puppies are kept in the foster home and taught many things such as housetraining and how to behave around people and many other things. The foster parents take the puppies to PetsMart or somewhere else where they have what is called an adoption fair. This is where people can come and look at the puppies. There are volunteers there who can tell some history of the puppies. These volunteers also provide applications for people who want to adopt the puppies. These people have to prove that they have a good safe home for the puppy to live in and also that the puppy won't be left alone all the time.

You're really better off getting your dog spayed. That way, accidents like this can't happen. I hope you do that after the pups are gone.
You can advertise the pups in newspaper classifieds, make posters with a picture of the pup, or take them to the animal shelter. You probably will have to pay a fee at the animal shelter, since most require a surrender fee when you take in your dog. But the benefit to it is that it's instant.

Try calling some pet stores first. You'd be surprised how many would be willing to take the pups off your hands.
Some vets will let you post ads at their clinics as well.
I had a stray cat decide to have a litter of 5 kittens in my garage one year and I took them away from her when they got old enough. To adopt them out, I took cute pictures of each kitten and composed a poster on my computer. Under each kittens picture, I gave them a name. People fell in love with the picture of the kittens. I had so many people that wanted them that I had to pick the most suited owners. I posted these ads where anybody would let me. Pet stores, vets, grocery stores etc.

The Humane Societies in my area will take your pups, but they are usually overrun, so you have to put them on a waiting list. Try adds in all the papers in your area and surrounding areas, also try making flyer's, radio classifieds, etc. Just a little helpful hint, though, a dog in heat will get knocked up if she's just in a fence, because that will not stop the male from climbing it. You need to put her in a crate, or somewhere where she can't be gotten to next time.

As far as I know, Animal Welfare shelters take owner give-ups for free. They certainly would be able to find homes for little puppies...they are the first dogs people look for.

My suggestion would be that you ather give the puppies to petshop to sell or otherwise post an add i the news paper. The problem with animal shelter is that they only keep animals for a certain period of time before they are destroyed.
