people who live a style that is as normal and acceptable as theirs. I mean -- a lot of the people that we spend time and energy trying to convince---are not going to change their opinion anyway. So why bother? I know that my life seems normal to me. I don't think that every minute I should have to justify who I am.

i have been tired of it for years and years. unfortunately, we need straight allies to ensure that we recieve equal rights, so we can't just put our heads in the sand. people need to be educated, even if it is a painful, often fruitless process.

I think that other straights are tired of trying to placate the straight community of the same thing. Just looks at the amount of abusers I have to report here. *laughs*

As far as outside of Yahoo Answers is concerned, I don't really hear anything from the average person since I live in a fairly big city. it's the politicians that are the real problem, what with Stephen Harper, Vic Toews and others. However, since I recently became a volunteer at a GLBT centre, I know that when I tell people what it is I do that some are going to at least take a step back, and I'm still not sure how I'll handle that.

Right on, brother. A friend told me that he had gone back to his small home town to live. He was the only out gay man there and really liked by a lot of people. But he grew tired of always being the local gay guy. This happens to members of a lot of marginalized groups.

If for every million bigots you can make one see that gay people are no different than anyone else is worth the tiresome effort.
I think that in today's society fighting to be accepted for who we are is as an important part of being gay as having attraction for the same sex.
If more people thought that fighting of equality and acceptance is not worth it the countries of America would still be European colonies and we would have several black slaves in each home.

I'm just thankful that some people are smart enough to see that we're not alien freaks for themselves.

Furthermore, I've learned from quite a few of my "straight" friends that they don't always feel particularly mainstream or normal, either.

you don't have to. The vast majority of us couldn't care less whether you're straight or gay. It's understandable for you to have focused on those who don't like it, however.

Still, it's interesting that you seem to view the 'straight community' as an entity with a single opinion and identical characteristics- rather what you accuse them of doing to you.

i got sick of it long ago. my answer to this, since i can't just not associate with hets was to assume a position of innocent untill proven str8. i make all my new acquaintances "come out" to me as str8. i refuse to acknowledge their relationship with common terms: wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend. instead it's lover, partner, life partner, friend... you get the picture. and sometimes i act surprised at the admission. graciously, of course. when people feel the hotseat they're less likely to put someone else in it.
