A lot of times it was because there was land available for farming. I had ancestors who lived in Ohio in the 1840s - they and a group of German-American families left Ohio and made their way to eastern Iowa because of this availability of land.

One historical event was the discovery of gold in 1949. Hence the name of the San Francisco 49Er's.
Another major event was the dust bowl. California offered people jobs to pick fruit and paid good wages.....sometimes.

Land was often free, hence the motivation. However, the land was occupied by others and was far from tamed. Clearly, a mixed bag.

life was very bad in europe at that time
and all they wanted was to live in peace and not have hunger and disease
land is what they wanted and some good weather with it.
also man always has this curiosity and challenge to see if i go just a bit more will it get better or worse?

there is the ocean and the mountains, you can ski or snow board, snow shoeing.there,s more lakes,there,s more farming,more parks,more outside field for your dogs to run around,
