WASHINGTON (AFP) - For the first time, a majority of American women are living without a spouse, media reported.

The New York Times, which based its report on an analysis of census results, said 51 percent of women in 2005 reported living without a spouse, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000.

"Coupled with the fact that in 2005 married couples became a minority of all American households for the first time, the trend could ultimately shape social and workplace policies, including the ways government and employers distribute benefits," the newspaper said.

What a very sad situation. I am a single parent and it's no fun. I think that women are evolving to the point where we don't need men that much any more. Only because extra choices (benefit system, abortion laws, divorce etc) means we have the choice of whether to remain in a partnership or not. It prevents the many tragedies that occur when women are forced to stay in an unhappy relationship. But it means that the men have to either change or leave the home. Sadly many men cannot adjust to this situation (having known only the chauvinist culture of their fathers). They leave/get kicked out for pastures new and so the cycle goes. Better in some ways but worse in others. Absenteeism is the modern form of marital cruelty. Puts the male children in a predicament - no male role-model means their role in life is unclear - might contribute to the rise in violence amongst young males. Complicated - it's all rather sad, especially as families do seem to function best when there are 2 parents, provided the relationship is good.
