A popular misconception is that the Coriolis effect determines the direction in which bathtubs or toilets drain, and whether water always drains in one direction in the Northern Hemisphere, and in the other direction in the Southern Hemisphere. This myth is perpetuated by the Simpsons episode, Bart Vs. Australia. In reality, the Coriolis effect is a few orders of magnitude smaller than other random influences on drain direction, such as the geometry of the sink, toilet, or tub; whether it is flat or tilted; and the direction in which water was initially added to it. Note that toilets typically are designed to only flush in one rotation, by having the flush water enter at an angle.

This is less of a puzzle once one remembers that the Earth revolves once per day but that a bathtub takes only seconds to drain. When the water is being drawn towards the drain, the radius with which it is spinning around it decreases, so its rate of rotation increases from the low background level to a noticeable spin in order to conserve its angular momentum (the same effect as ice skaters bringing their arms in to cause them to spin faster).

The corroleos effect is the effect of the Earth's rotation upon the wind. This will cause high pressure air cells to rotate anti-clockwise in the southern hemispere and vise-versa in the northern hemispere. The corroleos effect to too small to have an effect in your bathroom sink. The rotation of water down a plughole depends upon the shape of the sink and the way you pull the plug out, not which side of the equator your on.

The "corroleos" Effect is the effect that the rotating earth has on what you believe is motion in a straight line. Motion as you percieve it does not follow a straight path (in most cases). In the northern hemisphere, motion that starts out going due north will end up with an eastward component. Motion that starts out going south with end up with a westward component. Motion that starts out going straight up will end up with a westward component, and motion that starts out going straight down, will end up going a little east.

One would think this explains why all drains (or toilets) empty in the same direction (clockwise) in the northern hemisphere, but it has to do more with sink (or toilet) design because the effects are so small on the small velocities and distances encountered with a drain. However, it does explain why hurricanes and tornadoes rotate the way they do.

The earth spins, so all the wind n air in Northern Hemisphere to anticlockwise, n southern hemisphere's winds clockwise, Its becoz of this corroleos force that when u flush ur toilet it goes anticlokwise, or clockwise according to ur location

its due to rotation of the earth about its axis. its ccw in norhtern hemisphere and cw in the southern.

teh phenomenon generates weather patterns and many wonders of nature
