the dr. and or nurse should have given you these instructions before you left the hospital. normally newborns eat 1 oz every 2hrs. with such a low birth weight, i would try, but if the baby is in a deep sleep, it might not wake up, or you might wake it and it might choke on its food cause it could fall back asleep.

please, call the pedatrician, they will tell you what to do, right now@@ thats what the on call person is for! its a human and you are first time parent and they are use to it.

Check with your pediatrician! Usually, there is no need to wake him to feed him unless his pediatrician says that you should. His birth weight wasn't really all that low...I don't know how much in volume he should consume each day as I nursed both of my boys. What makes a difference is that his pediatrician may want to give him a fortified formula with supplemented, higher caloric intake if s/he feels that your son is not gaining weight sufficiently. Infants usually wake up when they are hungry if they have no other developmental problems, and it sounds as if your son doesn't have any other problems. Again, the best source of information is the pediatrician because s/he knows the particular problems and challenges (or lack thereof) that your son may have.

Congratulations on your new son!

you should feed him every 3 to 4 hrs even wake him up to eat! If he is at low weight he needs to eat . Baby's like to sleep alot when they are first born and you sometimes have to wake then up to feed them ! If they are so small then i bet your doctor would tell you to wake him up and feed him on time every 3 hrs or so !! In the hospital the nurse would wake up my daughter when it was feeding time ! They said with her being so small it was important for her to eat on time and they said baby will sleep alot and sometimes miss there feeding time if you don't wake them! So how can they gain weight if you don't wake them to feed them when they don't wake on their own?? Just be sure to ask the nurse or doctor , don't listen to know one else but them ! Because things change and people do different things now then they did 5 or 10 yrs ago !!! Like when i had my daughter we were told to let the baby sleep on their Stomach ! Now days they tell you differently, i think now they say put them on their back to sleep? you know because of SIDS. So things concerning a baby does change! Good luck and call your doctor or nurse about it please !!!!!!!

If has jaundice or any other condition, or if recommended by the doctor then perhaps it would be wise but check with a doctor first. Infants will wake when they are hungary and will they ever let you know about it. As for the volume..who knows *shrug* I breast feed on demand. When she wants as much as she wants. I dont and have never subscribed to the idea that a babies feeding has to be regulated or timed....

sweetie i nursed my son for ten months and i fed him when he wanted to eat. He slept very well during the night and I never woke him up to eat. Like I said he was kind of the boss with the eating schedule. He was a fat, healthy, happy baby. He is now a slim, healthy 19 year old, so I guess it was okay. Good luck and God Bless You and your little one.

Call your doctor, and ask what they want you to do. I had to with my daughter but she had jondaus so she wouldn't wake up on her own. If you really need to know right now call labour and delivery, they should have told you this before you left the hospital. Hope everything works out.

I agree with the Jim person. My nurses told me to wake him to eat, but no matter at what intervals your child eats, as long as it is getting its essential nutrients feed it when its hungry and dont push waking it. The baby needs sleep as much as food but Babies grow when they sleep so let them sleep. ' Let sleeping babies lye' Just trust those motherly instincts that your given and don't listen to anyone else about how to raise your little one. God gave your baby to you because he knew you could handle it. Good Luck and don't wish them to grow up too fast. Mine's 2 and time flew. I wanted him to walk and talk and now I spend all day tellin him to hush up and sit down!

Check with your doctor.

I'm of two minds - while feeding regularly may be good, interrupting his sleep may not be.

Talk to your doctor - that's who can answer this best.
