They are but they are not Medical Doctors they cannot perscribe physcal treatments only a Psychiatrist can do that. The Psychologist primarily adresses the emotional and cognative aspects of a disorder like a spider phobia, you don't need pills for that. A schedule of classical conditioning sessions will work better. Both Doctors work in consort to achieve health both the physcal part of the brain and the mental aspect. A Psychiatrist may test for chemical abnormalities or brain physcal abnormalities and fix it with drugs or surgery.

Psychologists are doctors in that they have received their PhD. Anyone who earns their doctorate (PhD) is considered a doctor.

However, psychologists are not Medical doctors, or M.D.'s. They cannot prescribe medicine, if you need it.

An M.D. who studies psychology and then goes into psychology is called a psychiatrist. That's what my dad is. He was an M.D. (family practice) for over 20 years, then he studied psychology and passed his boards and has been practicing psychiatry for over 20 years.

There are good psychologists out there... but you have to remember that they are more like glorified counselors and not medical doctors. I prefer to see either a counselor when I need counseling or a psychiatrist when I need help with my depression.

Psychologists are not doctors, but psychiatrists are and they can prescribe medications. A growing alternative to Psychologists is a "life coach"Life coaching is a practice of assisting clients to determine and achieve personal goals. they help you move forward instead of picking at old wounds

I think they are actually doctors..i believe in this coz a doctor is a person having a professional degree and capable of treating the patients of his diseases..similarly a psychologist treats the mental status of the patients..

You can get a doctorate without being an MD. What do you mean by "real" doctor. There are many types of doctors.

Psychologists are not medical doctors (M.D.s), but psychiatrists are. A psychologist, though, might have a PhD, so then you'd still call him/her "Doctor". But (s)he could not prescribe medications.
