Please do not take any notice of Shauny280 and attempt to ride the system for free.
Ticket inspections do happen regularly and fines are heavy.
Melbourne's public transport system is generally visitor friendly and the fare system allows unlimited travel within designated time periods.
The trams are a Melbourne icon: the City Circle service is free but all other lines are part of the Metlink ticket system.

G'day,
It's gonna be very expensive. I heard the private companies like Melbourne Trams spent alot in order to meet their contract to Victorian State Government.
However... if you are actually thinking the cost of tram ticket, then it depends on how long do you need to go (choice of 2hrs, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly) and how far do you want to go (short trip, zone 1, 2 or 3). I include the weblink below so you can browse and get the information completely.
Welcome to Melbourne :)
