In the 1930's the US was in severe poverty, some people were very rich but most were poor, perhaps not as much as Indian standards, but very extreme by historical US standards before or since.

Then America got one of the best Presidents they had ever had, named Franklin Roosevelt who changed the rules about how business was done. Poverty was not eliminated, but the majority of Americans achieved middle class.

Our "untouchables" did not do well at first, but the security most Americans felt, paved the way for big changes even there. All was never perfect and the very rich started a subversive class war to return to the old ways, and have been somewhat successful.

But President Roosevelt showed the way, and in spite of setbacks, both America and Most of Europe are much better off because of it.

Though I agree that what you are saying is true to some extent, we also have a tendency to blame the politicians for everything. To remove poverty from our country, what we should do is study the life of the most famous rags to riches story in post independent india, the lifestory of late Dhirubhai Ambani. contarary to what many think, Dhirubhai was an outstanding lateral(unconventional thinker). Taking his lead, Reliance executives began "Thinking out of the box" in all departments and that is the reason for their success more than anything else. I had written a published article on the subject in 2001:-

http://www.lifepositive.com/Mind/personal-growth/personal-growth/lateral.asp

The fact is that the world expert on Lateral thinking, Edward De Bono has repeatedly said that linear and lateral thinking should be taught in schools but nobody has taken heed( The real meaning of the word education is also to take out what is in instead of blindly stuffing in knowledge which can be done by teaching thinking).

If we adopt lateral thinking as a kind of "working philosophy", who knows one day we may be able to do for the nation what Dhirubhai was able to do for hiself. Politicians are public servants- we as their bosses should encourage lateral thinking ideas from them and everybody and see to it that they are implemented.

Politicians will blame religion and caste mentality of the public. They are here to serve the public interest and they reap benefits out of it.

the politicians are not responsible, it is we who have given them the rights. they have to realise that the public will not tolerate any nonsense. then they will get honest.
