People do enjoy watching others suffer, so long as it isn't them on the receiving end. The program organizers know they will have a high percentage of the 'musically challenged' be brave enough to audition and they select the best and the worst for public viewing.
At the end too, once the hype is mostly over, the final winner usually has a good voice and a crack at real stardom.
The judges may be smarter than they look, especially if they take a cut of the advertizing revenue for the endless hours the show is on. Love him, hate him or plain ignore him, everything Simon Cowall touches seems to pour money into his lap! Paula Abdul has a large fan-base from way back, plus Ryan Seacrest needs the exposure (not!).

They make these shows for the younger viewers
In a way i dont think the show is bad, as it gives an outlet for people to shine, when beforehand it was harder

I've never watched the damn show and I can't imagine watching it. I used to kind of like the Gong Show tho.
