i first updated all my window files then installed Service pack 2. I installed an additional firewall to windows firewall and adaware. Do i really need to reformat or are these updates enough??

You should also install anti-virus software, in case a virus or a trojan (not a condom: a trojan is a piece of software that masquerades as something else, but really is designed to get information from your computer or worse) has been left on your computer.
Make sure you run a full scan.
Note: it is not a good idea to install redundant security software - one firewall is enough, as is one anti-virus software. Installing multiple of these can cause serious performance issues on your computer.
