He was the 1st President since the Civil War to come from the ‘Old South’.
He had many problems to cope with:
- The Crisis in Iran (unable to secure the release of US Hostages held in Iran) & Afghanistan.
- The Energy Crisis, though he was unable to do anything very effective about it.
- Foreign Policy: he placed Human Rights at the forefront, criticised Alfredo Stroessner, Augusto Pinochet, the Apartheid Government of S. Africa, & other traditional allies. He also improved diplomatic and trade relations with the People’s Republic of China (but the U.S. unofficially recognized Taiwan through the Taiwan Relations Act.)
- Highlights of his Administration: Agreements on the M. East in the Camp David Agreement (Sadat and Begin). Agreements on the Panama Canal (turning the canal over to Panama.) SALT II Treaty with the Soviet Union. Dropped the ban on travel to Cuba and on U.S. citizens spending dollars in Cuba. Declared his support for "a Homeland for the Palestinians." When the USSR attacked Afghanistan, he announced the Carter Doctrine (not allow any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf)
To reach that goal, he promoted a training of Islamic Fundamentalists in Pakistan & Afghanistan -a contribution to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In the 1981 elections he was defeated by R. Reagan and G. Bush.
