My 5-month-old, for the past few hours, has been fussy off and on and keeps rubbing and pawing at the left side of her head, right above her eye. It's 12 midnight now and she's fussing in her bassinet and still feverishly rubbing above her eye. She often rubs her eyes when she's tired, but not like this. She doesn't have any fever and doesn't seem to be any pain (she's not clenching her fists or straightening and/or drawing up her legs), but this is causing great distress and she can't sleep. I don't see any kind of rash or wound on her forehead. Does anyone have a clue?? I am worried about her!

Sounds like it could be an early ear infection.
Or check around her hairline to make she doesn't have a rash or bump that may be itching or irritating her.
If she's still doing it tomorrow call your pediatrician.

If you are worried then take her to the doctor.. Don't mess around with the health of a baby even though you can't see any signs of illness doesn't mean there is nothing there take her to the doctor they are the ones who know what there looking for and can do the right tests....
Sometimes I used to feel silly when i took my daughter to the doctors when it was only about little things but lucky i did regardless to how i felt because she was diagnosed with kidney problems and had to have an operation..

She is rubbing her forehead because she can't believe that she has these parents who won't leave her alone when she is trying to sleep and keeps turning the light on.
Since she cannot talk yet,all she can do is rub her forehead in disbelief.

Could be any number of things. Excema, ear ache, head ache. Take her to the doctor and hopefully she will do the behavior while there and they can check her out.
